Zantel Network Modernisation for Better Communication

Zantel Limited under Millicom Group is undertaking a huge network Modernization Project which aims at modernizing the whole network in Zanzibar and the mainland which is one of the biggest project to be done by Zantel at one time.

Speaking at the press conference in Zanzibar, the Zantel Chief Technical and Information Office said the current network in Zanzibar was installed progressively between 2007 and 2015.

“The network comprises of 154 GSM sites, 111 of 3G sites and 4G sites in Stone Town. Some of the elements are now reaching end-of-service date. This project aims to replace all sites in Zanzibar with the latest model equipment and add new equipment where required”, he added.

Larry continued to point out that Zantel customers might experience some hiccups and network slowness here and there during the implementation time but the technical team is working hard to make sure these hiccups will not happen and they are working to make sure we get a permanent solution.

All the required equipment is already in Zanzibar and the work has started. The Zantel Technical team together with Ericsson and Huawei are working around the clock to make sure that the job is completed within the planned time. After the completion, our 3G network will cover all major areas in Zanzibar and with an improvement of 4G coverage within Stone Town, some major tourist centres, and town areas in Pemba.

The whole project worth more than USD 10M, will take 3 months to completion. Once the project is complete, we will be able to serve our customers better as we will have better network coverage, better voice quality and we will have a wider and better digital inclusion for the people of Zanzibar - more coverage, more speed.

“On behalf of the Management and staff of Zantel, I would like to thank our partners Ericsson and Huawei Technologies for the technical support, the Government of Zanzibar who is one of Zantel shareholders and the owner of the fiber network as well as Millicom Group our shareholder and investor for the support making sure this project is taking off”. He added.
